The Evolution of Meaning is a project 3 years in the making.  Probing questions of context and meaning, this series of new paintings examines broken, deteriorating and often vandalized figurative sculpture.  It explores the contextual fluid meaning of the work from the culture that originally produced and often venerated the sculpture, to our own understanding and perceptions in contemporary society.  Proposing an “Evolution of Meaning”, this series considers brokenness a meaningful change agent, and highlights the fact that what is not there is often more interesting than what is.

Courtney III, 18" x 24" oil on canvas

Courtney III is the 3rd portrait in a series.  Executed over the course of 10 sittings, the portrait explores contradiction and the complexity of physical expression.  It reveals a face out of harmony with that of the garment worn, and engages the viewer in a psychological dialogue that is echoed in the formal qualities of the painting.
